Born in Russia, Kalat lived most of his life in Jersey City before moving to Bayonne two years ago. Kalat was a practicing attorney since 1932, having earned his law degree from the New Jersey School of Law in Newark in 1929. Rocco Macchia Rocco Macchia, 76, of Jersey City died Wednesday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, New York. Born in Brooklyn, Macchia lived for 57 years in Bayonne before moving to Jersey City seven years ago. Macchia retired in 1976 after working for 30 years as a warehouseman for the federal government at Fort Jay on Governors Island.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, winning a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Victory Medal, and Distinguished Unit Badge, for action during the Normandy campaign. Macchia was a member of the P.J.E.
