What is mamasan in massage? ›

Mamasan (sometimes abbreviated MMS) is also used in the United States to refer to the woman managing the staff of Asian massage parlors.

Many “mamasans” (women who washed or cleaned for the troops) and mess hall workers took great care of military personnel and performed their jobs well. Some Vietnamese workers were spies for the Việt Cộng and used their familiarity to try to kill troops.

A mama-san or mamasan is usually a woman in a position of authority, especially one in charge of a geisha house or bar or nightclub in East Asia. In Southeast Asia a mamasan is a woman who works in a supervisory role in certain establishments, typically those related to drinking places.

The clapping technique is used to stimulate the muscles, target deep tissues, and increases circulation in the body. A massage therapist may use cupped hands to slap different areas of the body, such as the back, arms, legs, and feet.

Massage in Vietnam involves less movement – although some pulling and pushing is involved – but the focus is more about targeting knots via quite a firm massage, although you can ask a therapist to alter the pressure.

An expression commonly used in Vietnam was, "boocoo dinky dow", spelled correctly would be "beaucoup dien cai dau" meaning much crazy in the head or perhaps as the Vietnamese may have said, crazy as a kicking rooster, much like the American expression, "mad as a wet hen."

Massage and clicking joints

This isn't a sign anything is wrong! Before the massage there was stiffness so the joint was hardly moved. After the massage the joint moved much more freely so the muscles and tendons are more likely to rub hence a clicking sound. As long as there is no pain this is nothing to worry about.
