JailBase app lets users search for mugshots, arrest records using facial recognition | Biometric Update (2024)

A new app has just been released which lets users search for police mugshots and arrest records using facial recognition.

The app,developed by JailBase,allows users to search by facial image or by name to uncover arrest records and mugshots, and also to set alerts for arrests under a particular name. Results can be filtered by gender, race, location and date.

Currently the app is available on the Google play store and will be available for iOS in the fourth-quarter of 2013.

JailBase has spent a long time compiling arrest records throughout American counties, and says that this app represents the first time that the public can search mugshots using facial recognition.

“We’re excited to be the first to offer this technology to the public, Founder James Richmond said. “JailBase has always been about providing useful jail and inmate services to the public, and we feel that this mobile app is a great example of that.”

Though this is the first instance of a facial recognition mugshot search system, facial recognition searches have been growing in popularity over the last year.

Reported previously, two popular p*rn websites in the U.S. have created similar facial recognition services for users to find look-alikes or similar-looking performers online.

In fact, facial recognition is growing at unprecedented rates and adoption is through the roof.

According to a recent CNN/Time/Orc poll, 79% of Americans are in favor of using facial recognition at various locations and public events, and 81% support expanded camera surveillance on streets and in public places.

In fact,according to a recently-published research report, the global facial recognition market is estimated to grow from $1.92 billion in 2013 to $6.5 billion in 2018, at an impressive CAGR of 27.7%.
